Civil Emergencies

With more than 45 years of service, HSAR has been involved in some of the largest ground search and rescue, as well as civilian emergencies in Canadian history. Our team lead recovery efforts for large scale accidents, including recovery following the Swissair 111 plane crash and assisting the Red Cross in 9/11 passenger diversion activities.

We have participated in mass public evacuation for train derailments, floods, infrastructure damage, and forest fires. We have also provided transportation services during extreme weather events for hospital staff to and from locations.

The team also performs vulnerability checks at homeless sites in HRM. This involves team members checking on the well-being of people that live outdoors in our urban environment. They provide supplies as needed and the option to transport to a designated warming station or shelter. Halifax Search and Rescue, like all other SAR teams in Canada, can only be activated by either a police authority (most often) or another recognized emergency service. Anyone who believes a person is missing or requires assistance must call 911, which will then involve the police who in turn contact our Search Managers, who answer special phones 24/7.
